World Thrombosis Day (WTD) is marked every year on October 13. The day is dedicated to Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and draws attention to the often misunderstood condition of thrombosis. The day is marked with many events around the world aimed at increasing awareness about the diseases.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a dangerous condition that causes blood clots to be formed deep in the veins of the leg, groin or arm. The clot then may travel causing a blockage in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). When one suffers from DVT and PE  together they are known to have VTE.

It is a dangerous and deadly medical condition. The blood clot hinders the normal blood flow in the body, interrupting the circulatory system.

Symptoms of Thrombosis

The common symptoms of the disease are strong pain, swelling and tenderness in one of the legs, warm red patch on the skin in the area of the clot, particularly occurs at the back of your leg below the knee.

History World Thrombosis Day

The history of the day dates back to the birthday of Rudolf Virchow. He is said to be a pioneer in the pathophysiology of thrombosis. The German physician, pathologist, biologist and anthropologist, Virchow’s birthday is celebrated today dedicating it to his work in the development of the concept of “thrombosis”. The man had a museum to his name. The Berlin Museum of Medical History was formerly known Rudolf Virchow’s Pathological Museum.

Theme and Significance of World Thrombosis Day

As per worldthrombosisday.org WTD aims to increase global awareness of thrombosis, including its causes, risk factors, signs/symptoms, and evidence-based prevention and treatment.

Their mission supports the World Health Assembly’s global target of reducing premature deaths by non-communicable diseases by 25 percent by 2025.

The main aim is to spread awareness about the disease and educate people about its effects and consequences. To highlight the global burden of the disease that is only increasing is also one of the goals of the organization.
