Every year, World Heart Day is observed on September 29. The day aims to spread awareness among people about cardiovascular diseases and their effects.

Cardiovascular disease causes the maximum number of deaths. The day tries to promote a healthier lifestyle of people by asking them to adopt healthier food consumption. If it has opted, 80 percent of premature deaths can be avoided.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases take about 17.9 million people every year. That makes up to 31 percent of global deaths.

World Heart Day-Date

The day was founded in 2000 to spread awareness in people about risks they unintentionally invite with an unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle. Every year, a number of people lose their lives due to strokes, heart attacks, and heart failures. Initially, World Heart Day used to be on last Sunday of September. However, in 2010, September 29 was dedicated to World Heart Day.

World Heart Day Theme

This year, the theme for World Heart Day is “My Heart, Your Heart.” The goal for this year’s theme is to make people choose a healthy life for themselves and their loved ones.

As per the World Health Federation, the theme is to make a promise to ourselves and to our families, aiming for a better life.

The first theme for World Heart day picked in 2000 was “I Love my Heart: Let it beat!”. It often aims to improve not only an individual’s health but also the people surrounding them.

World Heart Day celebration

Governments and non-government organizations celebrate and promote World Heart Day with activities such as fun runs, public talks, concerts, and sporting events. The World Heart Federation organizes awareness events in more than 100 countries.

The events include:

  • Health checks.
  • Sports events, including walks, runs and fitness sessions.
  • Public talks and science forums
  • Stage shows and concerts.
  • Exhibitions.

These activities are done in partnership with organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), which is the UN’s directing and coordinating authority for health.
