History of the World’s Largest Pet Walk

Nearly as old as time itself is the relationship between humans and their companions, particularly canines. The continued interbreeding between dogs and wolves has had a significant impact on the domestication of dogs, and older dog populations are progressively replaced by newer ones. A small number of genetic studies have documented early domestication events in specific regions. Prior to 12,000 to 14,000 years ago, a limited population of gray wolves lived in India. One study suggests that these wolves were the ancestors of early canines. In the early years of the relationship between man and dog, when there were far fewer people than there are today, there was no culture of walking canines. As a result, society was reorganized to allow canines greater freedom of movement. As time progressed, individuals began to exercise their dogs, leashing and guiding them along designated paths. For some, it was merely a display of social elitism, while for others, it was the result of a close relationship with their canines. Not until the late nineteenth century did the prevalence of dog walking begin to rise. Jim Buck was the pioneer of professional dog walking in the United States, and there are now individuals who are specifically trained to walk dogs and who assist dog owners in walking their canines for a charge.

Others may elect to walk only one dog at a time. The duration of a walk is typically determined by the dog’s breed or the dog owner’s request, ranging from short walks intended to last no longer than the time necessary for the dog to eliminate waste to longer walks with a specific time limit set by the owner. Additionally, the age of the dog is considered when determining the duration of excursions. Dogs younger than 12 months should not be taken on walks longer than one hour; the minimal age for larger breeds is 18 months. This precaution is simply meant to secure the growing bones and joints of the dog.
