During the first six months of 2025 alone, 26,770 people died in accidents on National Highways. In 2024, officials recorded 52,609 deadly crashes on these roads. These numbers show how unsafe travel still is for many Indians.

Kurnool Bus Fire, Andhra Pradesh (October 24, 2025)
A terrible bus fire killed at least 19 people in Kurnool district. A private Volvo sleeper bus was travelling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru when it hit a motorcycle on NH-44 near Chinna Tekur village. The crash caused fuel to leak, and the bus quickly caught fire. The flames spread very fast. Seventeen adults and two children died inside the bus. The motorcyclist, Shiva Kumar from Kurnool, also lost his life.
There were 39 passengers on the bus. The driver managed to escape and helped some people by breaking windows. Around 20 passengers jumped out to save themselves. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh for families of those who died and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
Jaisalmer Bus Fire, Rajasthan (October 14, 2025)
Another deadly fire happened in Rajasthan when a private bus going from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur caught fire near Thaiyat village. Smoke first came from the back of the bus before flames covered the whole vehicle. At least 20 people died, and many others suffered serious injuries.
Rescue teams rushed the injured to hospitals in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. Officials later said the bus had unsafe changes. It was converted into a sleeper coach with flammable interiors. The bus was overcrowded, and the front exit was jammed. Many passengers could not escape in time. The Prime Minister announced the same compensation for victims as in other major accidents.
Karnataka Bus Fire, Chitradurga (December 25, 2025)
On Christmas Day, a private Seabird bus from Bengaluru to Shivamogga met with a deadly crash on NH-48. A lorry jumped the divider and smashed into the bus. The vehicles caught fire after the crash. At least 10 people died, and over 20 suffered severe burn injuries.

Out of 32 passengers, only nine escaped without injuries. Locals helped rescue people and shared videos of the fire online. The injured were taken to hospitals in Hiriyur and Chitradurga. The Prime Minister shared condolences and announced financial help for victims.
Hassan Truck Crash, Karnataka (September 12, 2025)
A speeding truck ran into a Ganesh immersion procession in Hassan district. The accident happened on NH-373 when the truck jumped the divider and hit the crowd. Eight people died, and 25 others suffered serious injuries. Many victims remained critical in hospitals.
Villagers said the driver lost control while trying to avoid a biker. Police had blocked one lane and diverted traffic, but the crash still happened. Doctors treated the injured at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and nearby hospitals.
Jaipur Tanker Blast, Rajasthan (December 21, 2025)
One of the most horrifying accidents of the year happened near Bhankrota on the Jaipur–Ajmer highway. A fuel tanker tried to take a U-turn when a truck crashed into it. The impact caused massive explosions. A sleeper bus behind the tanker caught fire, along with several vehicles and a nearby factory.
At least 14 people died, and 30 others were injured. CCTV footage showed passengers running with clothes on fire. The bus exit door got stuck, trapping 34 people inside. Rescuers pulled survivors out through the driver’s door. The Prime Minister announced compensation, and the Rajasthan Chief Minister ordered action to fix dangerous road spots.
