Three civilians, one of them a teenage girl, died as the army allegedly fired at protesters during a cordon and search operation (CASO) in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

They have been identified as Shakir Ahmad (22), Irshad Majid (20) and Andleeb (16).

A hospital source in Frisal area, near Redwini, confirmed that three people were brought dead to the hospital.

As per local sources, the army entered Redwini and Hovura villages in Kulgam district to launch a CASO.

“People came out soon after the army entered and started pelting the army with stones,” a local source said, adding that the army opened indiscriminate fire in response.

Around six people, as per hospital sources, have been injured among which three succumbed to their injuries on way to the hospital. Army spokesman Rajesh Kalia said details were being ascertained.

A police officer said,

“We are ascertaining details. As per preliminary information, some miscreants indiscriminately pelted a  patrol party of the Army with stones at Hawoora Mishipora and the army fired some shots.”
