The statements have been issued by 51 faculty members of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) condemning the amended Citizenship Act and proposed implementation of NRC. Faculty members have also condemned the police action against students of universities like BHU, Jamia.

The statement reads that “We, the teachers of BHU, IIT BHU and affiliated colleges are deeply pained and aghast with the recent CAA passed by Parliament of India and the declared follow up by the implementation of National Citizenship Register. This is completely against the spirit of freedom struggle and the idea of a pluralist democracy.”

One of the faculty members, Professor M P Ahirwar, who signed a statement condemning the CCA and NRC said, “We are against the action that has been taken against students at Jamia, AMU and even BHU. The students who have been arrested should be released.”

Ahriwar also said that they would send the letter to the President and Prime Minister.

All the signatories carried out a campaign condemning the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Wednesday, December 25, 2019 and made an appeal to the government to rethink the long term implications of these laws.

“We request the Government of India to rethink about long term implications of this Act and hope national interest would prevail over partisan politics. We also urge protestors not to indulge in violence and express their disagreement through peaceful and democratic means. We also condemn police brutalities on students of many universities, like Jamia Milia Islamia,” Ahriwar said.

Some of the BHU students who were protesting against the NRC and CAA  got arrested a few days ago and sent to jail.
