52-Year-Old Marxist Coordination Committee (MCC) to Merge with CPI-ML Today: End of an Era

In a significant political development, the Marxist Coordination Committee (MCC), a 52-year-old leftist political party founded by veteran leader A.K. Roy on April 29, 1972, will cease to exist as an independent entity on September 9, 2024. The party will officially merge with the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) or CPI-ML, marking the end of a once formidable political force in Dhanbad. The merger will be commemorated with a unity rally in Dhanbad’s Golf Ground, a location that has historically witnessed key political events in the region.

Following the merger, all MCC leaders and workers will become members of CPI-ML. The rally ground is already adorned with red flags and banners, and extensive preparations have been made for the event. For the first time in years, a leftist party in the region is holding such a large public meeting. Similar to other political rallies, the streets of Dhanbad are lined with posters and hoardings promoting the merger, adding to the anticipation surrounding the event.

The Rise and Fall of MCC in Dhanbad

There was a time when MCC held considerable influence in Dhanbad’s political landscape. A.K. Roy, a prominent left-wing leader, served as a Member of Parliament from Dhanbad three times. MCC candidates also won several times in the Nirsa and Sindri Assembly constituencies. In the last state assembly elections, MASS contested independently, but now, with the merger into CPI-ML, the party is expected to field candidates as part of the INDIA alliance in the upcoming elections.

The merger is seen as a step toward strengthening the left-wing presence in Dhanbad. It could potentially lead to further unification of other leftist organizations in the region, with significant impacts not only on mainstream politics but also on labor and workers’ movements.

Vinod Singh’s Take on the Merger

Vinod Singh, CPI-ML leader and MLA from Bagodar, commented on the long-anticipated merger. He said the merger process had been under discussion for a considerable period, with senior leaders from both parties involved in deliberations. Singh noted that MCC and CPI-ML had collaborated on several initiatives in the past. He emphasized that the merger would impact not only Dhanbad but also the broader political scenario in Jharkhand. The decision marks a significant step toward leftist unity in the state, and Singh believes that the leftist front will emerge stronger in the coming days.

This historic merger signals a new chapter for the leftist movement in Jharkhand, potentially reshaping the region’s political dynamics and labor politics.
