In the US every year, Women Equality Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the passage of the 19th amendment which states that the prohibition of the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the US on the basis of sex, and which gave women the right to vote.

In 1857, the amendment was first introduced in 1878 and the day was celebrated in 1973 for the first time.

History of Women Equality Day

US Secretary of state Bainbridge Colby on 26 August 1920 signed a proclamation at his own house in Washington and ended a struggle for a vote that has been going on from century earlier.

When civil right movements line anti-slavery, moral movements were widespread across the country during the civil war era, women played a  major role in their revolutionizing. But at that time also they were denied the right to vote. Post this, when women all over the country suffered inequality by white men, it was then the suffrage movement started and that was the reason which led to the signing of that proclamation.

Celebration of the day

This year, Women Equality Day is celebrated by wearing Purple color to show support to women. To show solidarity one can wear a purple wristband, purple top/t-shirt, purple ribbon, and purple scarf or headband. In this way, the cause can be supported.
