In a major organisational revamp, the Congress on Thursday has replaced its existing state unit chiefs in two states where Assembly elections happened recently. The Congress leadership has appointed senior leader Pritam Singh as its Uttarakhand Congress chief and Sunil Jakhar as its chief in Punjab.

Sunil Jakhar, contested from the Abohar seat in Punjab, replaces Captain Amarinder Singh who has taken over as the chief minister of Punjab.

Notably, the 62-year-old Sunil Jakhar is the son of former Lok Sabha speaker and veteran Congress leader Balram Jakhar. Sunil is considered as one of the prominent non-Jat leader of the party in the state. Sunil was also the leader of opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2012-2017.

Pritam Singh replaces Kishore Upadhyaya as the new Uttarakhand chief. Pritam Singh has won from Chakrata seat in Uttarakhand.

Pritam Singh, 50, was a cabinet minister during the Harish Rawat government in Uttarakhand. He is the fourth time MLA from the Chakrata constituency.

In another appointment, the party has made Rajya MP Vivek Tankha as the new head of their legal department.
