Cash App Settlement Eligibility: Earlier this year, Cash App Investing and its parent company, Block Inc., agreed to a $15 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit alleging they failed to properly protect user data, leading to significant breaches. The settlement has now opened the door for current and former users to potentially receive compensation.
The Lawsuit and Settlement
The lawsuit, filed against Cash App and Block Inc., focused on two incidents where unauthorized access to account data resulted in fraudulent charges affecting numerous customers. The plaintiffs accused the companies of not taking sufficient measures to secure sensitive customer information, leaving users vulnerable to data breaches.
As part of the settlement, users who experienced unauthorized access or fraudulent withdrawals between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2023, may now be eligible for financial compensation.
Who Is Eligible for the Payment?
If you were a Cash App user during the specified period and experienced issues related to unauthorized access or fraudulent withdrawals, you might qualify for a settlement payment. Eligibility is based on three types of claims:
- Out-of-Pocket Losses: If you incurred out-of-pocket expenses due to unauthorized transactions, you can claim reimbursement of up to $2,500, provided you have the necessary documentation.
- Lost Time: If you spent time addressing issues caused by the breach, you can claim compensation at a rate of $25 per hour, up to a maximum of three hours.
- Transaction Losses: If you suffered losses directly related to unauthorized transactions, you can seek reimbursement for those amounts.
How to File a Claim
To be considered for compensation, eligible users must submit a claim through the official settlement administrator’s website by the deadline of November 18, 2024. The claims process requires documentation of your losses, so it’s crucial to ensure all information is accurate and complete.
If you believe you’re eligible, you should have received a personalized notice about the settlement by mail or email. However, even if you did not receive this notice, you can still submit your claim manually online.
What to Expect
The total amount you may receive will depend on the number of claims submitted and the extent of your documented losses. If the claims exceed the available settlement funds, payouts may be reduced proportionally.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for December 16, 2024. If you’re eligible, this settlement provides a critical opportunity to recover losses you may have suffered due to data breaches while using Cash App. Don’t miss the November 18 deadline to ensure your claim is considered.
