Social Security Fairness Act Benefits: The Social Security Administration (SSA) is making a major change that will affect millions of people. Thanks to the new Social Security Fairness Act, two rules called the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) are being removed. This means many beneficiaries will see higher monthly payments and receive a one-time retroactive payment.

What Are WEP and GPO?

The WEP and GPO rules reduced Social Security benefits for people who also received pensions from jobs not covered by Social Security. This included teachers, firefighters, police officers, and federal employees. Because of these rules, many people got smaller payments than they should have.

Now, with the new law, more than 3.2 million people will benefit. They will get back some of the money they lost and see an increase in their monthly payments.

What Changes Can Beneficiaries Expect?

Retroactive Payment will cover the increase in benefits starting from January 2024, when the WEP and GPO rules stopped being applied. At the end of March 2025, beneficiaries will receive a one-time payment.

Starting in April 2025, beneficiaries will see an increase in their monthly payments. For some, this could mean just a few extra dollars, while others might get over $1,000 more each month.

How Will Payments Be Processed?

The SSA is using advanced technology to make sure payments are sent out quickly. Most people will get their retroactive payment before they even receive a letter in the mail explaining the changes.

However, some cases might take longer. For example, if a beneficiary’s records are complicated and need to be updated manually, it could delay their payment. The SSA asks beneficiaries to wait until April before asking about their retroactive payment.

  • The one-time retroactive payment will be deposited at the end of March 2025.
  • The increased monthly payments will start with the April 2025 payment.

Beneficiaries will receive a letter in the mail explaining the changes to their benefits. This letter will arrive after the retroactive payment has been made.

If you are affected by these changes, it is important to stay informed. You can visit the SSA’s official website for more details. You can also sign up for alerts to get updates about your case.
