AMU Launches 25-Day Yoga Workshop Ahead of International Day of Yoga 2025

Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) Department of Physical Education kicked off a 25-day yoga workshop today, setting the stage for the International Day of Yoga on June 21.

The workshop is part of a broader nationwide initiative led by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, aimed at promoting health, wellness, and mindfulness through yoga practices.

Leadership & Participation

The event is being coordinated by Prof. Zamirullah Khan, with Prof. Syed Tariq Murtaza serving as Nodal Officer and Dr. Naushad Waheed Ansari acting as Secretary.

At the inauguration, Prof. Ikram Hussain, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Chairperson of the Department of Physical Education, highlighted the enduring importance of yoga.

“Yoga is not just a set of physical exercises; it is a holistic discipline that unites the body, mind, and spirit. In today’s fast-paced world, where stress and anxiety are taking a toll on mental health, the ancient practice of yoga offers a natural and accessible path to inner peace and resilience,” Prof. Hussain said.

Strong First-Day Turnout

On day one, 53 participants — including students, faculty members, and yoga enthusiasts — joined the foundational sessions, which combined practical exercises and discussions on yoga’s role in preventive healthcare and holistic living.

The practical session was led by yoga instructor Mr. Dharmender Singh, while Dr. Ansari welcomed attendees and set the tone for the first five days.

Looking Ahead

In his vote of thanks, Prof. Khan praised the enthusiasm of participants and acknowledged the support from AMU’s administration. He expressed hope that the workshop would continue to attract strong engagement over the next three weeks.

The Department of Physical Education has planned a robust schedule, promising participants not just physical practice, but insights into yoga’s mental and spiritual dimensions — ensuring the university community is well-prepared to celebrate International Day of Yoga 2025 with full vigor.
