Dilshad Ansari Dies in Bihar Police Custody: A 25-year-old man named Dilshad Ansari died while he was in police custody in West Champaran district, Bihar. Six police staff members were suspended after the incident. His relatives say he was beaten by police and they want an investigation at a senior level.
Reports dated October 13, 2026 said Ansari was held in a case linked to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, or NDPS, Act. Bettiah police said the six suspensions were ordered after the death.
Who was Dilshad Ansari, and what happened in Bihar?
Dilshad Ansari lived in the Auraiya area. It falls under Banuchhapar police station in Bettiah, West Champaran. Police took him into custody during an operation that began on Monday, October 12.
Police claimed Ansari was named in an NDPS case filed in August 2025. Police said he was being taken to Sahodra police station after arrest. They added that he allegedly jumped from the moving police vehicle. After that, he reportedly suffered serious injuries.
“After his arrest from Banuchhapar, Dilshad was being taken to Sahodra police station when he jumped from the running vehicle and, as a result, suffered grievous injuries,” the police statement said.
He was first taken to a subdivisional hospital in Narkatiaganj. Later, he was shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Bettiah. Doctors there declared him dead on arrival.

Family Alleges Assault
Ansari’s wife, Nagma Khatoon, said police came to her home near 2 am. She claimed the officers took her husband away. She added that the family was told he would be released after questioning.
Later, she said, the family got a call. They were asked to go to GMCH in Bettiah. When they arrived, they were told that he had died.
“When we came here, we found him lying dead in the hospital,” she said.
Akhbar Ansari, the victim’s father, said his son was hit on the head by police. He asked for a full probe. He also wanted the death to be examined closely. “My son died after he was hit hard on his head by police,” he alleged.
So far, these claims have not been verified on their own. The family’s version and what the police say do not match. Because of that, a neutral probe is needed to understand what actually happened.
6 Police Officers Suspended
After the death, six police officers linked to the Sahodra police station were suspended right away. Two of them were sub-inspectors: Ravi Shankar Kumar and Arun Kumar. The four constables named were Saudagar Kumar Yadav, Raj Kumar Rishi, Kundan Kumar, and Suman Kumar.
The suspensions are an administrative step. Still, they do not decide who is criminally at fault. Details about how Ansari was hurt, and how he died, are still in dispute.
A careful investigation will be needed. Medical reports and other available material should be used. That can help clarify the order of events and who should be held responsible, if any.
