Fitment Factor in 8th Pay Commission: The government uses something called the fitment factor to decide how much its employees and pensioners should get paid. This factor helps calculate salaries and pensions in a simple way. The basic idea is that the revised salary can be found by multiplying the basic pay with the fitment factor.

 the formula is:

  • Revised Salary = Basic Pay × Fitment Factor

The fitment factor makes sure that salaries increase fairly when the government revises pay scales.

The government is also looking at using a method called the Aykroyd formula to calculate wages. This was developed by Dr. Wallace Aykroyd. The formula focuses on how much money a person needs for basic living, like food, clothing, and housing. It tries to figure out what a worker really needs to live well, making sure wages cover the minimum cost of living.

8th Pay Commission: What’s Happening

The central government approved the 8th Pay Commission in January 2025, but the official notification is still not out. They have not yet chosen the Chairman or the members of the new commission. The government said it is “actively consulting” state governments about the 8th Pay Commission. Officials believe that soon they will make an announcement about forming the panel.

The highest basic pay goes up to Rs 2,25,000, and top officials like the Cabinet Secretary earn Rs 2,50,000 per month. Under the 7th Pay Commission, the fitment factor was set at 2.57.
