Did E20 Petrol Reduce Mercedes Mileage? Sourav Joshi's Viral Claim Gets Mercedes-Benz Reply

Did E20 Petrol Reduce Mercedes Mileage: Popular YouTuber Sourav Joshi has set off a new sort of conversation about ethanol-blended E20 petrol, after saying that the mileage on his Mercedes-Benz SUV, went from about 17 km/l to barely 5 km/l within just two days. He said this in a recent vlog that came out over the weekend and it quickly triggered an official response from Mercedes-Benz India. They basically repeated that every one of its BS VI petrol vehicles that are sold in India are fully compatible with E20 fuel.

Sourav Joshi’s Viral Claim

In his vlog, Joshi said his vehicle’s dashboard initially showed mileage dropping from around 17 km/l to 9 km/l before falling further to 5 km/l. He also claimed that the estimated driving range on a full tank had reduced from nearly 800 km to about 480 km.

Expressing concern over the quality of fuel, the YouTuber blamed ethanol-blended petrol for the sudden decline and said he feared potential damage to his luxury SUV.

Mercedes-Benz Issues Official Clarification

Responding to the controversy, Mercedes-Benz India released a customer advisory stating that all Mercedes-Benz BS VI petrol vehicles are “materially compatible with E20 fuel” and have been certified by the relevant regulatory authorities.

The statement reads, “At Mercedes-Benz, customer safety, vehicle reliability and performance are of paramount importance to use. All Mercedes-Benz petrol BS VI vehicles are materially compatible with E20 fuel and certified accordingly by elevant authorities. We are happy to support customers for any technical queries. Mercedes-Benz remains committed to sustainable mobility.”

The automaker said its vehicles are engineered to safely operate on E20 petrol and reaffirmed its commitment to vehicle performance, safety and compliance with India’s fuel standards. While the company did not comment directly on Joshi’s individual vehicle, its statement effectively rejected any suggestion that E20 fuel is inherently incompatible with Mercedes-Benz BS VI petrol models.

Did E20 Petrol Reduce Mercedes Mileage?

E20 petrol is basically 20% ethanol mixed in with 80% petrol, and it sits at the core of the Indian government’s ethanol blending programme meant to curb crude oil imports and bring down carbon emissions a bit. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has said, E20 fuel might cause a modest drop in fuel economy, often roughly 3% to 5% in some vehicles since ethanol has less energy than standard petrol. Still, the ministry insists the bigger environmental plus energy security advantages outweigh that small slowdown in mileage.

Joshi’s comments have started fresh public debate on what E20 actually does in day to day life, especially after the blend became more widely available across the country. Automotive specialists point out that fuel efficiency is affected by a whole bunch of other factors too, like traffic conditions, how you drive, the vehicle’s load, tyre pressure and overall maintenance. So it’s hard to pin a major mileage decline on the fuel alone without a proper technical check.
