Social Security COLA 2027: Millions of people in the US who get Social Security are paying close attention to inflation numbers. They are waiting to see how much their next cost-of-living adjustment will be.

The 2027 COLA is not final yet. Still, some groups have made estimates that can give an early sense of the range.

1. The 2027 COLA Has Not Been Set

The Social Security Administration is expected to post the 2027 COLA in October 2026. The exact rate depends on inflation data from the third quarter.

Because that data is not in yet, any claim that the 2027 change is already locked in is not reliable.

2. The Current Estimate Sits Near 3.6%

The Senior Citizens League has put the 2027 COLA at about 3.6 percent. This is lower than what it said earlier.

If that figure stays on track, a typical retired-worker benefit around $2,086 per month could rise by roughly $75. That would put it near $2,161 per month.

An advocacy group, the Senior Citizens League, has estimated that Social Security benefits have lost 13.7% of their purchasing power over the past decade. Even so, this is just an estimate. It is not the amount people will get.

3. How Does the COLA Get Figured Out?

Social Security uses the CPI-W, which stands for the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.

SSA looks at the average CPI-W for July, August, and September. Then it compares that to the average for the third quarter of the prior year.

The COLA comes out higher when inflation is stronger.

Because the last inflation readings for 2026 are still to come, the 2027 estimate can still shift.

4. When Will the Increase Show Up?

Once announced, the 2027 COLA will apply to Social Security benefits payable beginning in December 2026, with most beneficiaries receiving the increased amount in January 2027. SSA’s COLA system follows this December-to-January schedule.

5. A Higher COLA Does Not Mean More Purchasing Power

A percentage increase in benefits does not automatically mean retirees will feel richer.

Higher prices for housing, food, utilities, insurance and healthcare can absorb much of the increase. Medicare costs are another important factor for beneficiaries who have premiums deducted from their Social Security payments.

6. The 2026 COLA was 2.8%

For comparison, Social Security benefits increased by 2.8% in 2026. SSA said the increase applied to Social Security and SSI benefits for about 75 million Americans.

A projected 3.6% increase would therefore be noticeably higher than the 2026 adjustment.

People who receive benefits should not adjust their budget just because of a forecast. What you end up with will follow the rest of the CPI-W reports and the SSA’s official math.

It usually makes more sense to hold off until the October update. After that, use your current monthly check as the starting point and figure out the revised amount.
