A nation-wide strike has been called by major trade unions on September 2 with over 15 crore workers are likely to participate in the strike. The trade unions are going ahead with the general strike saying the government gave no heed to their 12-point charter of demands. The unions had also asked for higher minimum wages. Here are few things to know about this strike and how it may affect your city.

  • Who has called the strike?:

All India Trade Unions Congress (AITUC) and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) are some of the leading trade unions among others. RSS-affiliated Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) is the only major trade union which has opted out of strike.

  • Why the strike has been called:

The main reason trade unions have called strike is because of anti-worker and anti-people policies of the government. AICTU Secretary Amarjeet Kaur has said that the government is cheating the people. The unions have asked the implementation of social security measures which includes allocating pension for post-2004 entrants in the central government.

  • What is government’s reaction:

The government on Tuesday announced two years’ bonus for central government employees and raising of daily minimum wage for unskilled non-farm workers for ‘C’ category areas from Rs 112 to Rs 350

  • What will get affected?:

Services of sectors including, electricity, transport, mining, defence, telecom and insurance will be affected. Banks, government offices and factories will most likely be closed on Friday. Public transport services will also be affected.

  • What won’t get affected?:

Railway employees have so far not indicated whether they will join the strike or nor hence trains services are unlikely to be affected. Schools and colleges are unlikely to get holiday.
