Days after Ireland welcomed its first gay Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, the President of Serbia has nominated a gay woman to be the prime minister for the deeply conservative Balkan state.

New Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, has picked Ana Brnabic to succeed him as the prime minister. Her approval by parliament will be largely a formality, as his party and its allies hold the majority.

Ana is not only Serbia’s first openly gay PM, but also the first woman in that post.

“I believe that Brnabic has professional and personal qualities to be prime minister,” Mr Vucic said.

However, as per media reports, he is expected to remain the most powerful figure in the country, following his landslide victory in the presidential election in April.

41-year-old Brnabic is a non-party technocrat and a graduate of the University of Hull, England. She entered politics in 2016 when she became Serbia’s first openly gay minister and headed the ministry for public administration and local self-government.

Brnabic will take charge of the office as the country prepares for EU membership.
