With an aim to recharge ground water during monsoon, authorities and officials of district administration and ground water department have taken up water management lessons with development agencies and other private units in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. At least one or two ponds are being dug up in each of over 2,000 villages of the city under MNREGA scheme to collect rain water.

Samuel Paul N, Chief development officer (CDO), Allahabad, said that the ponds would collect rainwater in rural areas.

According to experts, a 100 sq mt structure can recharge around 80,000 litres of water annually. Prominent government and private buildings must have water harvesting system for that. The authorities are currently carrying out a survey to find out the exact number of buildings with rainwater harvesting system.

“The necessity for rooftop rainwater harvesting has been felt to meet the demand for water and to reduce the run-off which chokes storm drains. It also helps in reducing groundwater pollution and in improving its quality. Rainwater also improves the quality of ground water through dilution when recharged and the system is not expensive”, an expert at the ground water department said.
