The Canadian government has stepped in to aid Indian students who have been protesting inflation and are experiencing a housing crisis. The protests began in the second week of September on the campus of Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario.

In Canada, the protesting students resided in tents near the college premises. Over 3,500 international students entered Canada at the start of the new academic year in September. Due to high rents and North Bay’s limited size, it was difficult for students to find affordable housing.

The Montreal Youth Students’ Organization (MYSO) backed protesting Indian students in Canada and referred to the situation as a “housing crisis.”

All Canadore students who participated in this week’s demonstrations on the Commerce Court Campus are currently being accommodated. The institution will provide additional updates next week, according to a spokesperson quoted by Indian Express.

The MYSO also assured the report that affordable housing will be arranged for Indian students and that all tuition will be refunded if they decide to transfer to another institution.

Following the protests, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized relief for students contending with rising living expenses.

In the Canadian province of British Columbia, a 17-year-old high school student was assaulted at a bus stop following an altercation with another adolescent. On September 11, the student was reportedly assaulted with beer or pepper spray by another teenager as he exited a public transportation bus on his way home.

This is the second assault on a Sikh student in a city in the central Interior this year. Gagandeep Singh, a 21-year-old Sikh student from India, was assaulted in British Columbia province by an unknown group of men who ripped off his turban and dragged him by his hair across the sidewalk.
