AMU further extends winter break as CAA protest continues

The winter break has been extended by the Aligarh Muslim University due to an ongoing protest against the amended citizenship law throughout the nation. Earlier, the university was to reopen on January 6, 2020 however, as per the notice released by the AMU, Vice-Chancellor Tariq Mansoor has made the decision to extend the vacations again during the meeting held on Wednesday, January 1, 2020.

Only after a discussion and review of the situation, a detailed schedule for the reopening of the university “in a phased manner” will be notified.

The university had declared an extended winter break on December 15, 2019 night amid Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest in the campus.

During the violent protest, around 60 people were injured including 40 students, AMU security staff and policemen.

Students injured alleged that police and the Rapid Action Police (RAF) indulged in excesses.

In the protest which turned violent, police have booked 56 persons, including a number of students. After the nine days of the violence i.e., on December 24, the RAF filed a separate FIR in which around 1,000 unidentified students were booked.

For continuing their peaceful protest against the CAA in the campus, a student committee has been formed.

On the other hand, the main accused who have caused a ruckus in Aligarh Muslim University on 15 December in protest against the citizenship law, have been identified. Based on the video and photo, action has been recommended against 12 people. Among the 12 people identified, Salman Imtiaz, president of AMU Students’ Union, is also included. The SSP of Aligarh has asked the university administration to take action at its own level.

At the same time, due to the criminal case against five students, action is being prepared under the Gunda Act. A letter has also been written to the DM for this. Apart from Aligarh, violence is being identified in different cities of the state. At the same time, damages are also being charged by the accused who damaged public properties during the violence.
