The complaint also accuses Liu of exploiting an authentication vulnerability to download confidential hardware-related files after leaving Apple.

OpenAI Rejects Apple’s Accusations
OpenAI has strongly disputed Apple’s allegations. In a statement issued after the lawsuit was filed, the company said it believes in fair competition and employee mobility and that it is not aware of evidence supporting Apple’s complaint. The company added that it remains focused on developing innovative technology rather than relying on competitors’ proprietary information.
“While we take these allegations seriously, we’re not aware of any evidence that this complaint has merit,” OpenAI said in a statement, first shared by Bloomberg reporter Ed Ludlow on X. “We believe in fair competition and allowing people the freedom to work wherever they choose, and we’re focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere.”
The lawsuit arrives as OpenAI is preparing for the release of its next flagship AI model while continuing to expand beyond software into dedicated consumer hardware. Industry analysts say the legal dispute could complicate recruitment, supplier relationships and hardware development timelines, particularly after OpenAI’s acquisition of Jony Ive’s startup io, which strengthened its ambitions to build AI-first consumer devices.
