Assam: Retired teacher commits suicide to avoid humiliation over foreigner tag

Guwahati: Nirod Kumar Das 74, a retired teacher and practicing lawyer was in deep distress after his name was excluded in the National Register of Citizens (NRC), committed suicide to avoid humiliation. This is the third case of suicide after the NRC excluded over 40 lakh people in the state.

His body was found by his family members, hanging in his room in Mangaldoi area of Assam. Das was a government school teacher for 34 years and after his retirement started practicing law.

Police have also recovered a suicide note which explains the reason to take the drastic step. In the note the victim has claimed that “To avoid the humiliation of being branded as a foreigner in their own state after the NRC Draft,” said the family members.

Mr. Das is survived by his wife, three daughters and their husbands and the children, whose names are intact in the list except him.

A group of students has called for a day-long shutdown to protest against the NRC draft exclusion list followed by the suicide of common citizens.

Nirod Das was also served with a notice from the Foreigners’ Tribunal office and was very upset with the processing center informing him as a foreigner, said his family.

Bereaved family members were in deep anguish and didn’t allow the autopsy of the deceased body and also demanded a strong action against the NRC.
