Assembly Elections: 84% voter turnout in Manipur, 57.03% in UP

An estimated 57.03 per cent polling was recorded in the sixth phase of the ongoing Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and 84 percent voters cast their votes in the first phase of polls in Manipur on Saturday.

The day-long poll process remained peaceful in both the states.

In Uttar Pradesh, voting held for sixth phase of polling in 49 seats spread over 7 districts of eastern UP phase.

Around 1.72 crore voters, including 94.60 lakh men and 77.84 lakh women, were eligible to cast their votes in this round to decide the fate of 635 candidates, including 63 women.

Most of the polling stations were manned by the Central Para Military Forces. About 2,150 polling stations and about 680 helmets were identified as sensitive and vulnerable. Special security measures taken at such places.

In the first phase of assembly election in Manipur, voting for 38 assembly seats spread over six districts concluded on Saturday.

There are 168 candidates including seven females in the fray.

The prominent names include Speaker Lokeshwar Singh, MPCC President TN Haokip, Former Union Minister Chaoba Singh, Former Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh and veteran politician Okram Joy of the BJP.
