These were live figures and not the final Day 1 totals. More money was still expected to come in from evening and night shows.
Awarapan 2 Has a Big Opening Day Lead
At the time of the update, Awarapan 2 had earned more than four times the collection of Batwara 1947. The difference was also visible in theatre occupancy.
- Awarapan 2: 35% occupancy
- Batwara 1947: 12% occupancy
The stronger start puts Awarapan 2 clearly ahead in the first round of this box office battle. The film also had a strong lead in advance booking before release. Reports from the day showed that it was attracting much more interest from moviegoers than the Sunny Deol starrer.
The sequel has another advantage in the form of its connection with the 2007 film Awarapan. Emraan Hashmi is back as Shivam Pandit nearly two decades after the original. The first film built a strong fan base over the years even though it did not become a major box office hit when it first arrived.
The return of Shivam has created interest among old fans. The sequel also features Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi and Suvinder Vicky. Reports about the film have also pointed to the nostalgia around the original and Emraan Hashmi’s return to the character.

Batwara 1947 Opens Slowly
Batwara 1947 has had a much quieter start at the box office. The period drama is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan. It features Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol.
The story is set during the Partition of India in 1947. It follows Sikander Mirza and his family as they deal with the difficult situation after moving to Lahore. The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. The story deals with displacement, communal tension and the human suffering caused by Partition.
The movie also brings Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi together again. The two have worked together on well-known films including Ghayal and Damini.
