HISTORY OF AZERBAIJAN ARMED FORCES DAY
Azerbaijan, whose official name is the Azerbaijan Republic, is a transcontinental republic bordering both Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Historically, a larger portion of Azerbaijan was a part of Persia. The former Azerbaijan Armed Forces were established on June 26, 1918, but were soon disbanded in 1920, when Azerbaijan joined the Soviet Union. The country’s name was altered to Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan.
On August 30, 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the modern Republic of Azerbaijan declared its independence. The Armed Forces commenced their reformation. They made use of abandoned Soviet bases and equipment. The Armed Forces were reestablished on October 9, 1991, in accordance with the law of the new Republic of Azerbaijan.
The Armed Forces are comprised of three branches: the Azerbaijani Land Forces, the Azerbaijani Air Force and Air Defence Force, and the Azerbaijani Navy.
On October 9, 1992, Baku’s Azadliq Square hosted the first military parade in the annals of independent Azerbaijan in honour of Armed Forces Day. The parade is one of the country’s largest to date.
In 1998, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan proclaimed June 26 as the Day of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan, commemorating the 1918 pre-Soviet declaration of independence. The event is celebrated annually by the Azerbaijani people with parades, pyrotechnics, and concerts. It is also a national holiday, so nobody works or attends school.
