The granddaughter of Dr Baba Amte and a social activist, Sheetal Amte died by suicide after a family feud in Maharashtra’s Warora. She was rushed to the Warora government hospital but was declared dead on arrival by doctors. It is reported that Sheetal committed suicide by taking poison.
According to media reports, the Amte family was locked in a dispute. It was also reported that Sheetal was suffering from depression. Baba Amte’s sons Vikas and Prakash and their wives Bharti and Mandakini, respectively, had recently issued a clarification on several allegations made by Sheetal, Vikass’s daughter, on social media. She was the Samiti’s CEO.
Sheetal Amte, CEO at Maharogi Sewa Samiti (Leprosy Services Committee) at Anandwan in Chandrapur had recently leveled allegations against the trustees, and activists of the leprosy service committee in Anandvan on the social networking site Facebook.
Dr Sheetal Amte had been serving leprosy patients with her husband and family for the past several years. Sheetal was the daughter of Vikas Amte and Bharti Amte and niece of Doctor Prakash Amte.
Baba Amte received Indias second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan for his social work, particularly for leprosy patients, carried out at Anandwan, an asylum for the afflicted discarded by the society.
