HISTORY OF BAHAMAS INDEPENDENCE DAY
The Lucayans ruled the islands between 500 and 800 A.D., marking the beginning of the islands’ recorded history. At the time, the Lucayans were a subgroup of the Caribbean island-dwelling Tainos. Prior to 1492, they lived independently for many centuries without foreign interference. Christopher Columbus spotted the islands, and Spanish ships subsequently followed in his wake. They enslaved the indigenous population, resulting in the island’s abandonment in 1513. In 1648, English colonists began populating the island.
The island’s shallow waters made it difficult for large ships to access it. However, it also provided passage for lighter vessels. This geography was exploited by pirates, and as a consequence, the area became a pirate haven. Between 1706 and 1718, Nassau on New Providence Island in the Bahamas was the stronghold of a loose confederation of pirates. In 1718, the British took severe measures, and the Bahamas became a colony. Following the American Revolution, additional migrations occurred. Thousands of American loyalists settled in the Bahamas after receiving land grants. In addition, they carried with them slaves and established plantations. The Bahamas were quickly populated by African slaves. When the Bahamas abolished slavery, it became a safe refuge for freed slaves. Today, ninety per cent of the population consists of Afro-Bahamians.
The Bahamas achieved independence in 1973 under the leadership of Sir Lynden O. Pindling. The actions of Pindling earned him the title “Father of the Nation” in the Bahamas.
