Bank Holiday on January 23
Banks will stay closed tomorrow on Friday, January 23 in three Indian cities. These cities are Agartala, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata. The reason for the closure is the celebration of Saraswati Puja, the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Veer Surendra Sai Jayanti, and Basant Panchami. In the rest of the country, banks will work as normal and customers can visit branches as usual.
This holiday is part of the official bank holiday list under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Banking Services that will still work
Even though bank branches will not open in Agartala, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata, customers can still use online and digital services. People can transfer money online, check account balances, and pay bills using internet banking or mobile apps. NEFT and RTGS services will also work, depending on their regular timing.
ATM services will continue to operate, so people can withdraw cash or use cards for payments. Customers can also place online requests for chequebooks, demand drafts, and other account-related services.
Why Banks are Closed on January 23?
Banks are closed tomorrow because several important events are observed on this day. Saraswati Puja and Basant Panchami are celebrated across many parts of India. People usually wear yellow clothes and pray to Goddess Saraswati, who is known as the goddess of knowledge and arts.
January 23 is also celebrated every year as the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. In 2026, it will be the 128th birth anniversary of the freedom fighter.
