The Republic Day 2026 main theme centers around the 150th anniversary of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s national anthem ‘Vande Mataram. Spectators watching the Kartavya Path march route will encounter displays of paintings and artistic creations which show the song verses while creating a atmosphere of national pride and collective cultural identity.
In addition to celebrating the song itself, the parade will explore two complementary sub‑themes: “Swatantrata ka Mantra: Vande Mataram” (The Mantra of Freedom) and “Samriddhi ka Mantra: Atmanirbhar Bharat” (The Mantra of Prosperity and Self‑Reliant India).

EU Leaders as Chief Guests
In a striking diplomatic gesture, Europe’s top leaders have been invited as the chief guests for the 77th Republic Day parade, marking one of the most significant international presences in recent years. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and António Costa, President of the European Council, are expected to attend the celebrations as joint chief guests.
The presence of these two leaders shows how India and the European Union have developed their strategic relationship, which will be further enhanced through the upcoming India-EU summit on January 27, 2026.
Parade Key Events
The Republic Day 2026 ceremony will begin at 9:30 am, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay a wreath at the National War Memorial. The main parade at Kartavya Path will commence at 10:30 am and run for about 90 minutes.
The Republic Day parade itself promises a meticulously choreographed blend of strength, precision, and art. Along with the traditional marching contingents and military bands, special new military displays will showcase India’s evolving defence capabilities. One of the most talked‑about elements is the battle array formation, illustrating how Indian defence units could operate in realistic scenarios.
A total of 30 tableaux from states, Union Territories, Ministries, and Departments will roll down the Kartavya Path, each reflecting diverse aspects of India’s cultural tapestry and developmental journey.
The Indian Air Force flypast will include 29 aircraft, featuring Rafale, Su-30 MKI, MiG-29, along with Apache and LCH Prachand helicopters, forming a spectacular finale.
The inclusion of the Zanskar Pony, Bactrian Camel, and Army Dog Squad will represent India’s diverse operational terrain. A special IAF veterans’ tableau will honour former service personnel.
Additionally, around 400 tribals have been specially invited from across the country to watch the Republic Day parade.
The representatives of the indigenous communities hailing from remote forests, highlands, and borderlands across the country will also get a chance to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They will join 5,000 “special guests”, who have made exceptional contributions to nation-building, and their spouses, to watch the spectacle.
Veterans, innovators, researchers, and special invitees who have made outstanding contributions to society will also be part of the audience with around 10,000 special guests expected to witness the ceremony firsthand. The Republic Day 2026 celebrations will extend beyond their ceremonial duties.
