Barcelona beat Leganes 5-1 as Messi scores a double

Barcelona’s high flying trio of forwards Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar all scored as they won 5-1 over newly promoted Leganés in La Liga on Saturday. Messi scored twice, while the other two shared a goal apiece. The Argentine has now scored five goals in two matches for Barcelona.

Unlike most sides who like to defend and play deep against Barcelona, Leganés attacked their illustrious visitors. The hosts impressed but Barcelona’s quality on the counter-attack showed its true form and the match was all but done and dusted by half-time.

Last weekend, Barcelona left Messi and Suárez on the bench against Alavés, only to see the promoted side snatch a rare 2-1 win at Camp Nou.

There was a new look to Barcelona’s starting formation, as manager Luis Enrique opted for a three-man defence, with Rafinha and Jordi Alba playing a wing-back role. Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta played through the middle and the usual MSN trio was up front in attack.

Messi opening the floodgates in the 15th minute before Luis Suarez doubled the lead. Neymar put the result beyond question right before the break, but that did not stop Messi netting his second via a penalty in the second half. The impressive Rafinha rounded off the scoring right after the hour mark, for Leganés Gabriel Appelt scored the consolation goal.
