Beaufort Scale Day 2023: Date, History, Significance, and Facts

Beaufort Scale Day 2023: The 7th of May is Beaufort Scale Day, and we are here to demonstrate how you can commemorate this special occasion. Do you realise that it has been more than a hundred years since the Beaufort Scale was first developed? An officer serving in the Royal British Navy by the name of Sir Francis Beaufort is credited with developing the Beaufort scale.

Beaufort developed a straightforward measure that was used to rate the intensity of the wind based on a point system that ranged from 0 to 12. He named this scale the Beaufort scale. The celebration of Beaufort Scale Day was conceived as a means of paying tribute to Sir Francis Beaufort, the man responsible for the development of the Beaufort Scale, which finds widespread application in the maritime industry.

HISTORY OF BEAUFORT SCALE DAY

Sir Francis Beaufort was born in the year 1774 in the town of Flower Hill, which is located in the Irish county of Meath. Because of a mishap at sea that was caused by inaccurate charts, Beaufort had a lifelong ambition to develop more precise navigational tools for use on the ocean. In the beginning of his career, Beaufort served in the fleet of the British East India Company. In the year 1800, while serving on H.M.S. Phaeton, Beaufort suffered serious injuries. In the year 1810, Captain Beaufort was promoted to the position of Royal British Navy officer.

During the years 1811 and 1812, Beaufort was away at sea and travelled throughout Anatolia. Ancient ruins can be seen in Anatolia, which Beaufort referred to as “Karmania.” Anatolia is located in Turkey. It is in this area that Hadrian’s Gate can be found. Karamania, or a Brief Description of the South Coast of Asia Minor, and the Remains of Antiquity was a book that was written by Beaufort and published in 1817.

First person to publish Admiralty Tide Tablets

About two thousand different navigational charts covering all seas were available at Beaufort. He worked to increase awareness and adoption of tide tables in British waters. In the year 1833, he was the first person to publish Admiralty Tide Tablets. The Beaufort Scale was designed by Beaufort in order to provide a straightforward method for determining the speed of prevailing winds. On the scale, a reading of zero indicated that there was no wind, while a reading of 12 indicated that there was a hurricane. There was no requirement for any specialised equipment.

On December 17, 1857, Beaufort took his last breath and passed away. He was laid to rest in Hackney, which is located in London. The day that is now known as Beaufort Scale Day was established to commemorate Francis Beaufort and his invention of the Beaufort scale, as well as his contribution to the development of accurate charts spanning all seven seas. People observe this day by recalling the brilliant individual and gaining a deeper understanding of the inventor and his efforts.
