Panaji, Dec 8 (IANS) The ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by farmer unions across the country on Tuesday, seemed to have no impact on Goa, where offices, both private and government, markets and public transport continued to function as normal.

According to a Goa government spokesperson, no untoward incident was reported anywhere in the state, where nearly all opposition political parties, namely the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Goa Forward, Nationalist Congress Party have supported the farmer unions’ call for the nationwide strike, to demand a roll back of the three farm laws passed by Parliament earlier this year.

Heads of trade unions and political parties supporting the strike, also gathered at the city square in Panaji, Azad Maidan, where they condemned the Central government for passing “black laws”.

“These laws will make the farmers puppets in the hands of corporate players,” state Congress president Girish Chodankar said.

“It was the railway workers strike which led to the imposition of Emergency and the subsequent political doom of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The farmers are now showing the way to opposition leaders to come together to fight the BJP,” Goa Forward president Vijai Sardesai said.

The Bharat Bandh has had little to no impact on market places, offices and public transport in Goa. According to the Goa Police no untoward incident related to the strike has been reported anywhere in the coastal state.

On Monday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had said that the strike would have “no impact” in Goa.
