Bikini mountaineer Gigi Wu freezes to death on trek to Taiwan

A mountaineer Gigi Wu, known worldwide for climbing peaks in a bikini, froze to death while her trek to Batongguan Historic Trail in Yushan National Park, Taiwan.

According to the reports, Wo fell down into a 30m gorge in Taiwan. Following her fall, she used a satellite phone on January 19 to call for assistance. She indicated she was in distress and unable to move after the fall but poor weather conditions hindered her rescue.

In the message, the 36-year-old said she’d fallen more than 20m (65ft) down a ravine in the park -she said she was trapped at the bottom and was completely unable to move due to being seriously injured from the fall.

The National Airborne Service Corps said they were unable to locate her using Black Hawk rescue helicopters on three separate occasions due to poor weather.

Wu’s body was eventually found on Monday, 43 hours after her distress call, close to where her distress beacon was sent from by the Nantou County Fire Department after they resumed the search on foot.

Gigi Wu is believed to have died of hypothermia.

Wu amassed a large social media following after posting pictures of her healthy lifestyle in exotic locations. She often posted pictures of herself on Instagram wearing bikinis as she tackled some of the country’s highest peaks and last year, she said she spent roughly a third of the year (127 days) hiking.

She said the idea came about after she lost a bet with a friend and her resulting punishment was to take pictures in a bikini on top of a mountain.  She claims to have completed around 100 hikes and worn at least 97 different bikinis over the past four year
