In 1959, King turned professional and continued to compete on the collegiate circuit. Billie Jean King and Karen Hantze Susman, aged 16 and 17, won the Wimbledon women’s doubles championship in 1961. King won the Wimbledon singles championship for the first time in 1966, and then again in 1967 and 1968.
She also won the Australian Open in 1968 and the U.S. Open in 1967 as a singles participant. According to her website, between 1961 and 1979, King won a record 20 Wimbledon titles, 13 United States titles (including four singles), four French titles (one singles), and two Australian titles (one singles), for a total of 39 Grand Slam titles.
