BJP leader sent to 12-day police custody in connection with child trafficking case

Women’s wing leader of BJP party Juhi Chowdhury who was arrested on Tuesday in connection with an alleged child trafficking case, has been sent to 12-day police custody by the Jalpaiguri Court.

Juhi Chowdhury was arrested from Batasia area close to the Indo-Nepal border on Tuesday night. CID have claimed that she has been involved in the Jalpaiguri child trafficking case. Four persons have been booked so far in the case of trafficking of at least 17 children to foreign buyers. Chowdhury has been produced in the Jalpaiguri court on Wednesday as per reports.

With Chowdhury’s arrest, a total of four persons has so far been arrested in connection with the case for their alleged involvement in the selling of babies and children across India and also to foreign couples in the last few months from an NGO Bimala Sishu Griho. Sonali Mondal, Chief Adoption Officer the NGO, Chandana Chakraborty, Chairperson of Bimala Sishu Griho and Manas Bhowmik, Chandana’s brother, were arrested by a seven-member CID team.

Meanwhile, The Bengal unit of the BJP removed Juhi Chowdhury from the position of a state secretary of its Mahila Morcha as the news of her arrest breaks through the nation. In fact, her father Rabindranath Chowdhury was also removed from his position in the state committee, both for an indefinite period.
“We have a legal cell that will try to obtain bail for her. Let the law take its course. If she is found guilty, she should be punished. We are not saying right now that she is innocent,” BJP Bengal president Dilip Ghosh told the media earlier Wednesday morning.
