BJP Surat councillor booked for accepting bribe of Rs 50,000 from doctor

Surat: Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) nabbed BJP municipal councillor Jayanti Bhandari for accepting a bribe from a doctor of Rs 50,000 to facilitate construction of a new clinic in residential Singanpor area of Surat.

The councillor demanded money from the doctor for not taking any action against the construction being made in the residential area.  He was caught red-handed by the ACB and is the third councillor from Surat to get nabbed in such a case.

“We received a complaint from a person (identity not revealed) that a local councillor was demanding a bribe to allow construction of a medical clinic in a residential society of Surat. A trap was laid and the councillor was caught red-handed while receiving a bribe from the complainant,” said an ACB source. BJP MLA from Majura Harsh Sanghvi said the party suspended the councillor immediately after learning about his misdeed. “The law will take its own course and corruption will not be tolerated at any cost whether it is the BJP or the opposition party,” he said.

According to the case, the doctor was building a clinic on the first-floor building of his house and councillor Jayanti approached the doctor and demanded the bribe of Rs 50,000 for not taking any action for building commercial property in the residential area but the doctor approached the ACB office and filed a complaint. The ACB plotted a plan and caught the councillor red handed and he was later arrested.

Earlier also such cases were registered against councillor from Surat. BJP councillors Meena Rathod and Nancy Sumra were arrested for demanding bribes and both for construction purposes.
