According to Brazilian authorities and witness statements, Maria Eduarda was prepared for the jump by event staff before being launched from the bridge. However, witnesses immediately realized something was wrong and shouted that the safety rope had not been attached. She fell approximately 40 metres to the ground.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and Brazil’s Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU), arrived at the scene, but she was pronounced dead there.

In the footage, a frightened voice can be heard shouting, “People, the rope,” while another urgently cries, “Guys, the rope.” Videos circulating online appear to show bystanders shouting “the rope” moments after the jump, though authorities continue to investigate the exact sequence of events.

Who Was Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas?
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was 21 years old and had a clear interest in fitness and nature, according to the news outlets. She was studying Physical Education and Sports Management and she frequently posted on her social networks content about sports, fitness and nature. Several hours before the incident, she had published images and videos on the attraction of rope jump and announced her participation and eagerness. These publications have now gone viral after the news of her death broke.

In a social media post made around 7:30 am, she shared a photo from the location and wrote, “Who was the crazy person that let me jump off a bridge?” The post became one of her final public messages.
Investigation Underway
Brazilian Military Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Multiple sources indicate that the person(s) operating the attraction have been held for questioning. Authorities will also investigate the CCTV footage of the incident and witness interviews.
Following the fatal fall, six individuals associated with the operating companies were arrested. According to authorities, two men fled the scene immediately after the accident and were later found in a wooded area with assistance from the police helicopter.
Authorities detained six people from the company running the jump, suspecting negligence and possible homicide charges. The loss of the university student has reignited discussions and fear regarding the strict regulation of extreme sports.
