Buddha Purnima 2023: Date, History, Activities and Facts

May has two full moon days, and the Buddhist and Hindu lunar calendars can be interpreted differently, so the date varies. Buddha’s birth is commemorated as part of the Vesak festival, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and burial of the Buddha. Explore the intriguing life of this profound spiritual leader with us.

HISTORY OF BUDDHA PURNIMA

Buddha Purnima (also known as Buddha Jayanti) commemorates the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, a Nepalese prince (circa 563-483 BCE) who became the Buddha, the originator of Buddhism. ‘Purnima’ means ‘full moon’ in Sanskrit, which is why it is commemorated on a full moon day. ‘Jayanti’ means ‘birthday’. The term Buddha is given to those who achieve ‘bodhi’ or wisdom; therefore, Siddartha was given the moniker once he attained enlightenment. It is commonly observed during the Hindu/Buddhist lunar calendar month of Vaisakhi.

However, Buddha’s followers never officially celebrated his birthday, though festivals in his honour were conducted for centuries. In fact, Buddha Purnima was not formally celebrated until the modern era. Buddha Purnima was first recognised as a celebration during Vesak in May 1950, during the first conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Due to Buddha’s attainment of nirvana on a full moon day, it was agreed that the day of the full moon in May would be auspicious.

Buddhism gained popularity as a result of its teachings of nonviolence, reverence for life, and a more egalitarian approach to the role of women, which were consistent with both traditional and modern notions of progress. Thus, many nations around the world, particularly in Asia, came to become predominantly Buddhist. Buddhism itself splintered into sub-sects as each culture adopted and assimilated the core principles. Today, Buddhism is practised in various forms across the globe, and it is particularly inclusive because it does not venerate any deities (as do other religions). Buddhism is well-liked among a variety of groups due to its philosophical orientation.
