The day falls on the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of the Chaitra month which provides an auspicious day for devotees who seek to obtain wisdom and prosperity while overcoming obstacles.

1. Sankalp (Resolution)

Devotees start their day with an early bath together with a solemn fasting vow which they take through their dedicated practice of their fast for the day.

2. Fasting Rules

The followers must sustain their day-long fasting period through the entire day.

Some people follow nirjala vrat which prohibits them from drinking water while others eat fruits and milk.

People fasting must stay away from all food items which include grains and onion and garlic and tamasic foods.

3. Ganesh Puja Procedure

The worship area requires cleansing before the worshipper positions either the Lord Ganesha idol or his picture.

The worshipper should provide the following items which include:

  • Durva grass
  • Modak or laddoos
  • Red flowers
  • Incense and दीप (lamp)

Recite Ganesh mantras which include this mantra: “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah”

4. Important Ritual Practice

The devotees must conduct their puja during Madhyahna muhurat which is their scheduled time for worship.

The devotees should read or listen to Ganesh Vrat Katha.

Tradition maintains that people should avoid moon sighting on Chaturthi days because they believe this practice will result in false accusations which bring Mithya Dosha especially during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

6. Breaking the Fast

After puja completion or in the evening the fast is broken.
