BYD Seal U Hybrid SUV India Launch: Car company BYD India showed its new Seal U SUV on June 9, 2026. This is a very special car because it is a plug-in hybrid as it uses both a petrol engine and an electric battery. BYD plans to officially start selling this SUV in India by the end of 2026. This launch is a big deal for India because plug-in hybrids are usually very expensive luxury cars. The Seal U will bring this advanced technology to regular buyers for the first time.
How the BYD Seal U Hybrid Works?
Before this, BYD only sold 100% electric cars in India, like the Atto 3 and the Seal sedan. The Seal U is different. It is made for people who want an electric car experience but are worried about finding charging stations on long trips.
The engineering core of the hybrid setup relies on the Xiaoyun 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine, which achieves a thermal efficiency of 43.04 percent, placing it at the pinnacle of global production engines. This is paired with an 18.3 kWh proprietary Blade battery pack and a highly integrated Electric Hybrid System featuring dual electric motors operating at an estimated 97.5 percent efficiency. According to manufacturer data, this enables a combined fuel consumption of just 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres, resulting in a total operating range of more than 1,200 kilometres.
Driven by Electricity First
Most hybrid cars in India use a petrol engine as the main power source. The Seal U works the opposite way. It uses electricity first. When you drive around town, the car acts like a normal electric vehicle. When the battery runs low, the petrol engine turns on. Instead of moving the wheels directly, the engine acts like a generator to charge the battery while you drive. The petrol engine only helps move the wheels directly when you are driving fast on the highway.
The petrol engine in this SUV is one of the best in the world at saving fuel. Because the engine and the electric motors work together so well, the car uses very little fuel. On a long trip, a full tank of petrol and a full battery charge will let you drive over 1,200 kilometres without stopping.

BYD Seal U Hybrid SUV India Launch: Features
The Seal U is a large and comfortable five-seater SUV. It looks a lot like BYD’s electric cars, but it has a front grille with open slots. This grille lets air in to cool down the petrol engine.

Inside the car, there is a very big 15.6-inch screen for maps and music. Measuring 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height, with a 2,765 mm wheelbase, the Seal U is a substantial five-seater mid-size SUV that matches the dimensions of incoming rivals in the premium segment. This screen can rotate vertically or horizontally. There is also a screen behind the steering wheel for the driver. The car comes with nice leather seats, a big sunroof and special safety cameras and sensors that help the driver avoid accidents. You can also use the car’s battery to plug in and power external items like laptops or camping gear.
What the Company Says
BYD believes that this car is perfect for India right now because it gives drivers the best of both worlds.
“Our objective is to make sustainable mobility more practical and accessible by combining electric driving for everyday use with the absolute convenience of long-distance travel,” said Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business at BYD India, during the technology demonstration.
Expected Price
BYD is now preparing its factories and testing the car for Indian roads. The company expects to launch the car by December 2026.
Experts believe the Seal U will cost between Rs 45 lakh and Rs 50 lakh. At this price, it will compete with other popular premium SUVs. However, it will have a big advantage because it is the only plug-in hybrid in its class. Another brand, JSW Motor is also planning to launch a similar hybrid SUV called the Jetour T2 later this year.
