Does CalFresh impose a time limit on students?

Re-certification of a CalFresh application is customary on an annual basis. Thus, students who have their applications approved before June 10 may qualify for food benefits for an entire year without the need for recertification.

The deadline for students without CalFresh to be considered for temporary exceptions is June 10. Annually, students who are already enrolled in CalFresh are required to recertify their eligibility.

If they meet the two provisional eligibility requirements for the program, they should determine whether or not they can submit their recertification by June 10. They may qualify for up to one year’s worth of benefits if this is the case.

CalFresh does not impose a time limit similar to the CalWORKS (TANF) program, wherein individuals are typically ineligible for assistance once the allotment period has expired. In contrast, beneficiaries of the CalFresh program are approved for benefits for a predetermined duration, following which re-eligibility verification is required.

The CalFresh office will approve a household for a specified number of months after determining that the household is eligible to receive CalFresh benefits.

A “certification period” refers to the duration, ranging from one month to one year, during which a household is authorized to receive CalFresh benefits.
