The History of Camp Fire Girl Day
Before the Boy Scouts, there was no comparable organization for young women that enabled them to pursue their interests. Mrs. Charles Farnsworth, William Chauncey Langdon, and Mr. and Mrs. Luther Gulick established a nationwide organization dedicated to the advancement of young women. This group of females was dubbed the Camp Fire Girls by Langdon. As of 1912, Camp Fire Girls of America was incorporated as a formally organized organization.
The organization was perceived as a sibling group by the Boy Scouts of America. By 1913’s conclusion, there were sixty thousand Camp Fire members! The initial edition of their manual was released in 1914. They helped support French and Belgian orphans, conserved supplies and sold Liberty Bonds during the First World War. To mark the group’s 50th anniversary, an initiative was implemented that involved the construction of 13,000 birdhouses and the cultivation of two million trees. Their membership reached 274,000 by 1974, and they began admitting males in 1975. At that time, the name of the camp was Camp Fire Boys and Girls.
Camp Fire offers educational initiatives that primarily emphasize service learning, leadership development, camping, and environmental awareness. Additionally, some programs cater to the unique requirements of the community. Since its inception, camping has been an integral element of Camp Fire, which now operates 130 camps across the nation. Members are employed across various age cohorts. They are designated Little Stars, Starflight, Adventure, Discovery, and Horizon, in that order of age. The WoHeLo medallion award is the most prestigious recognition bestowed upon the organization annually, benefiting 200 members.
