Canada Day 2023: Canada Day is observed on July 1 by everyone who considers Canada to be their home and native land. This day commemorates the 1867 anniversary of the Constitution Act, which united three Canadian territories into a single nation. Indeed, in 2017 Canada observed its 150th birthday!
WHEN IS CANADA DAY 2023?
“O Canadaaa!” Canada Day, observed on July 1, honours the nation and all things Canadian.
HISTORY OF CANADA DAY
Prior to 1982, Dominion Day was the national holiday in Canada. The date was subsequently renamed Canada Day. Canada’s history, unlike that of many other countries, is not littered with numerous conflicts and bloodshed. The possibility of unification between the British North American colonies was discussed during the middle of the 1800s. The British North America Act went into effect on July 1, 1867, resulting in the establishment of an independent Canada. The dominion’s territories included Upper and Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. With the passage of this act, Canada was divided into Quebec and Ontario, with provisions for future colonies to join. This is how the modern nation of Canada was formed. The British North America Act was the Canadian constitution until 1982.
Dominion Day was instituted in 1879, but few Canadians observed it because they still identified as British citizens. This altered in 1917, on the 50th anniversary of confederation, when Dominion Day began to gain popularity. In 1946, a measure to rename Dominion Day was introduced in the House of Commons, but its passage was halted due to disagreements over the new name.
On the 100th anniversary of the nation’s founding in 1967, there was a surge in Canadian patriotism, and the celebrations took off. Even before 1982, when the name was officially adopted, Canadians would refer to the holiday as Canada Day.
