Tension escalated in northeast Delhi with protesters torching at least two houses and a fire tender in the Jaffrabad and Maujpur areas, where pro and anti-CAA groups clashed for the third consecutive day.

Keeping in view the worsening condition of Delhi, a midnight court proceeding was held by a division bench of Justices S Muralidhar & Anup Bhambhani of the Delhi HC to ensure the safe passage of injured victims to the nearest available government hospital and immediate emergency treatment.

Now today on Wednesday, Feb 26, another proceeding was held in the early afternoon, where Justice Murlidhar suggested confidence-building measures to be taken up. He says highest functionaries of the state level should visit victims and their families to assure that the law will work for them.

He also added we can’t allow a repeat of 1984 in this city under the watch of this court. All injured police personnel should be treated with utmost urgency.

The court said that Helpline and help desk to be constituted and the special night magistrates are to be designated at courts for 2 weeks. HC says all the basic amenities to be provided to displaced persons in shelter homes.

Next hearing into the matter will be held on Friday, Feb 28.

For the uninitiated, With the violence spiralling, Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting with cops and officials on Tuesday evening, his third in 24 hours.

The meeting was also attended by Indian Police Service (IPS) officer SN Srivastava, who was appointed as the special police commissioner on Tuesday. Late at night, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Northeast Delhi, to take stock of the law and order situation.

The police have appealed to the people of Delhi to ignore rumours and unverified messages being circulated on social media related to the violence.
