Celebration of the Horse Day 2023: Celebration of the Horse Day is observed annually on July 15 to encourage reflection on the economic, cultural, and historical contributions that horses have made to the United States. It was also created to recognise the significance of horses to the nation’s security, recreation, and heritage, as well as their ongoing impact on American culture through media like film and their continued presence in open space.

HISTORY OF CELEBRATION OF THE HORSE DAY

Even before the United States was founded, horses played a significant role on the American continent. It is believed that horses roamed these regions between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago before becoming extinct. In the late 1400s, they were reintroduced to the Western Hemisphere, and in 1538, to Florida.

Until the mid-1800s, when crossbreeding became prevalent, Colonial Spanish Horses were common in the southeastern and western United States. Approximately at the same time, some horses were released into the wild, and mustang herds roamed the plains. In the United States, there are currently over 33,000 wild horses.

Native Americans obtained horses in the 1500s and 1600s. The first communities to receive them were the Comanches, followed by the Blackfoot and Crow. Native Americans of the Great Plains were particularly dependent on horses.

In the 1800s, ranchers utilised horses on cattle drives and ranches as well as for transportation, hauling, and farming. With the introduction of Thoroughbred horse racing, prominence of horse racing increased during this time.

Beginning in the early 1900s, horses were bred for military and agricultural purposes, but as mechanised transportation became more prevalent after World War I, horse populations declined. In 1915, there were over 20 million horses in the United States, compared to only 4.5 million in 1959. There are roughly 9.2 million horses in the United States presently.
