₹1,264 Crore Ballari-Guntakal Rail Project: The Union Cabinet on Friday approved a ₹1,264 crore railway infrastructure project to construct the third and fourth railway lines on the Ballari-Guntakal section, marking a significant push to strengthen rail connectivity between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The decision, cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to ease congestion on a busy rail corridor.
The approved project will add approximately 46 kilometres to the Indian Railways network through multi-tracking of the Ballari-Guntakal section. The corridor is seen as strategically important, because it links major industrial and mining regions while also handling both passenger movement and freight activities at the same time.

As per the government, the whole project is set up under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which is basically meant to strengthen multimodal connection and logistics, by doing integrated infrastructure planning. The proposed expansion is designed to take away slow points on one of southern India’s key railway routes and also boost how smoothly operations run.
The Ballari–Guntakal stretch is a kind of lifeline for shifting bulk commodities like iron ore coal, limestone, dolomite, iron and steel items, fertilisers as well as foodgrains. With more rail capacity in place, the plan expects to enable about 16.22 million tonnes of additional freight traffic every year, so industries around here can carry and move goods in a more streamlined manner.

Better Rail Links For Villages And Tourism
The project runs across three districts in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and is expected to improve connectivity for roughly 99 villages, which will benefit around seven lakh residents overall. Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “The project approved today is for 46km and it will unite Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The duration of this project is of three years.”
Officials also said the upgraded railway line will improve access to important tourist destinations, including Ballari Fort and the Sri Kumara Swamy Temple, while making travel more reliable for passengers using the corridor.
Completion Targeted by 2028-29
The Centre has targeted completion of the project by 2028-29. Besides strengthening rail infrastructure, the construction phase is expected to generate employment and support economic activity across the region.
The approval comes as the government continues to invest in railway capacity expansion to accommodate rising passenger demand and growing freight volumes, while reducing congestion on high-density routes.
