In a tragic incident, a 95-year-old Church was gutted to ashes in a devastating fire in Meghalaya capital Shillong in the wee hours of Sunday. The flames engulfed most parts of the church and a house adjoining it.

An elderly couple, who lived in the house, reportedly died due to suffocation.

Confirming the incident, East Khasi Hills district superintendent of police, C Lyngwa said two persons, one male and another female, died inside the house which was located close to the church.

Built in 1924, the fire broke out in the Church at about 3:30 AM and left the wooden structured place of worship totally gutted. Several houses adjacent to the Church were damaged due the impact of blazing fire.

After some people noticed flames coming out of the church, they immediately informed police and fire services. However, when police and fire services teams arrived at the spot, flames had engulfed most parts of the church and the adjoining house.
