Chapra Assembly Constituency 2025:Chapra Assembly constituency, numbered 118, lies in Saran district of Bihar. After the 2008 delimitation, it includes Chapra municipality along with gram panchayats such as Naini, Fakuli, Karinga, Sadha, Mouna, Tenua, Barhara Mahaji and Rivilganj block. The region is a mix of urban and rural areas which makes the voter base diverse.
Voters and Local Issues
Whereas the town of Chapra is where the urban voters are mostly concentrated, rural voters continue to influence the results through issues like agriculture, flood relief, and connectivity. Caste composition historically has had a very big impact. Traditionally, Rajputs and Yadavs have been the major players, but the Vaishya community has started to make its presence felt in recent years.
Hindus are the majority, however, Muslims are still a relatively large group within the electorate. In the 2020 assembly elections, the number of voters on the electoral rolls was approximately 3.3 lakh, and the turnout was just under 51%.
The local issues have remained the same over the years: whereas in urban areas people complain about poor roads, drainage, sewerage, and drinking water, in rural areas floods, riverbank erosion, the state of schools and hospitals, and unemployment of youth have become the main issues. Representation of caste and community may not be openly discussed but it still remains a force to reckon with.
Chapra Assembly Constituency 2025: Recent Political History
For several decades candidates belonging to either the Rajput or Yadav communities no matter what their party used to be elected in Chapra. In 2015 however it was Dr. C. N. Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who won the seat with a Vaishya background and since then he has been able to repeat his success in 2020 as well thus getting the trend to change. Earlier, RJD had a hold on the region through Randhir Kumar Singh who managed to get a win in the 2014 by-poll and gave close fights later on.
The 2015 and 2020 turning point show a new voter pattern whereby candidate’s community background is not the only factor considered. On the contrary, trustworthiness, party work among the people, and party performance have become important.
Election Numbers (2010–2020)
Over the course of elections from 2010 to 2020, the margins of victory have been shrinking. In 2010 Janardan Singh Sigriwal of BJP got the better of the competition and won more than half of the total votes. In 2015 BJP cheered C. N. Gupta to contest the election who gained around 45 percent of votes and defeated RJD’s Randhir Kumar Singh who secured 38 percent of votes.
The difference between the two was only around 11,300 votes. In 2020 these two nominees were once again pitched against each other, however, this time the difference was even smaller: C. N. Gupta polled 44.97 percent whereas Randhir Kumar Singh got 40.95 percent, the margin being just 6,700 votes. The data demonstrates that while BJP has continued to be strong, RJD has been steadily coming closer thus making this seat one of the most watched battlefields in Saran.

What To Watch During the Contest?
1. Caste Identity vs Candidate Profile: Whether voters will remain loyal to the traditional Rajput / Yadav camp or communities like Vaishya / other trader castes and minority communities will move by setting a new trend if a non-Yadav/Rajput candidate (like C. N. Gupta) carries on appearing?
2. Margin and Turnout: As the margins in recent elections have been progressively narrowing (from ~11,000 in 2015 to ~6,700 in 2020), a small voter turnout change especially in rural gram panchayats or among young voters might be the ones to decide the result.
3. Efficacy of Local Governance / Local Issues: Urban demands (in Chapra town) for basic services, infrastructure, drainage etc., and rural issues (floods, connectivity, agriculture) may tip votes.
4. Alliance Dynamics and Candidate Selection: Vote swings may happen if major parties change their alliances or choose a candidate from a particular caste/community.
5. Youth, Women & Minorities Voting Patterns: The perception of law and order, plus youth unemployment and aspirations, may be the determining factors of youth turnout.
