Hidyatullah National Law University students have gone on a hunger strike demanding the resignation of VC, Sukhpal Singh. The VC, among other things, has failed to take any action with regards the complaint of sexual harassment filed by students.

HNLU students have been struggling for over a month now, against the VC’s apathy demanding his resignation. The Chhattisgarh High Court had earlier ordered his removal before the decision was put on hold by the Supreme Court. The VC, instead of speaking to the students has instead threatened the closure of the University (sine die) and called their protest ‘unlawful’.

The HNLU women hostellers had protested successfully to get their curfew timings extended till 10:30 pm and towards a more equal access to University space and resources. This has ignited the fire that we see in HNLU students continued struggle! Not only against curfew timings, but to fight sexual harassment on campus, and against financial irregularities on campus, negligence of mandatory admin action on exams.

Pinjratod stands in support of the students on the hunger strike and demand that the autocratic VC dialogue with students as opposed to threatening them. Let’s remember that this has become a pattern where the administration and VC’s often find it easier to allege that students protest are ‘unlawful, illegal’ (BHU, RIE Bhubaneshwar) and threaten to close the University as a tactic to suppress student movements! This, indeed, will not be tolerated!

‘Hunger strike is our last resort’: Harshita Tomar, 4th years student, HLNU, appeals for support from all.
